Skyscanner is beta testing two artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools for personalized destination discovery and road trip planning.
Available in English-speaking markets, Explore with AI allows travelers to search for trips using natural language rather than entering specific destinations and travel dates. For example, users can ask for “cheap flights to Japan in December” and get personalized recommendations. The tool offers suggestions to help travelers identify destination preferences, travel dates and travel style.
A visual display enables users to compare features such as flight prices and duration, weather and “destination vibes” alongside AI-generated commentary. Skyscanner said early testing found that 60% of users clicked through to view flight options generated through Explore with AI.
The company also introduced a road trip planner that creates personalized driving itineraries based on travelers' preferred route types, such as scenic, cultural or adventure-focused journeys. The tool surfaces car rental options and recommends stops and attractions along the route.
“At a time when travelers are navigating an increasingly complex travel landscape, we're focused on building tools that help them plan and book with confidence,” CEO Bryan Batista said. “We're experimenting with how AI can make every stage of the journey simpler and more intuitive, from discovering new destinations to road trip planning.”
Skyscanner also announced updates to several existing features. It expanded its DROPS flight deal alerts, enhanced Flight Tracker with gate, terminal and baggage information and rebranded its accommodations platform as Stays, increasing its inventory from 3.5 million to more than 5 million properties.
Batista previously told PhocusWire he sees AI as a way to deliver more personalized travel experiences. In February, the metasearch company launched a ChatGPT app that enables travelers to search for flights before being redirected to booking sites to complete their transactions.
