Google has updated its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) with new capabilities to simplify shopping for users.
The company has added a new “Cart” option enabling agents to save or add multiple items to a shopping basket from a single store.
Shoppers on UCP-integrated platforms will also be able to access the same loyalty or member perks that they would on a retailer’s site through Identity Linking.
And Catalog functionality enables agents to retrieve product details, such as inventory and pricing, from a retailer in real time.
The moves comes days after OpenAI’s decision to shift Instant Checkout in ChatGPT to apps.
In a blog post announcing the updates Ashish Gupta, Google’s VP and general manager for merchant and shopping, said the company would continue to update shopping experiences in AI Mode in search and its Gemini app with relevant UCP capabilities.
“Additionally, we are actively working to onboard more retailers of all sizes to agentic experiences on Google with a simplified UCP onboarding process in Google’s Merchant Center, rolling out over the coming months."
Partners including Stripe and Salesforce plan to deploy UCP on their platforms in the near future, he said.
Google announced its UCP standard back in January and at the time said: "UCP establishes a common language for agents and systems to operate together across consumer surfaces, businesses and payment providers."
