Travelport will form a joint venture with Japan Airlines to take over the running of the former global distribution system known as Axess.
The system will be known as Travelport Axess and has come about seven years after Travelport took over the technical running of Axess International in 2012.
Travelport will hold a majority stake in the joint venture and the new business is expected to be formed from June 2019.
The platform will provide online, mobile and corporate travel booking and expense management tools to travel agencies based in Japan.
It will also have access to Travelport's existing global distribution platforms known as Galileo and Apollo.
The relationship between JAL and Travelport from 2012 coincided with JAL ending a relationship and buying back shares in its subsidiary that were previously held by Sabre.
Sabre used to own 25% of Axess, a relationship which started in 1995 when Sabre was part of American Airlines and it was brought in to provide additional technology and distribution services to the JAL-owned system.
Yoriyuki Kashiwagi, JAL's executive officer of international passenger sales, says: "We believe that the future of travel will be transformed by technological innovation.
"I am confident that Travelport Axess will be able to help Japanese travel agents to respond to growing global demands by offering services based on state-of-the-art technology."
Travelport is currently in the process of coming off the public markets via a $4.4 billion takeover by Elliott Management Corporation and others.
