Canada-based BackBid first emerged on the scene in 2011 with a platform to allow travelers sell unwanted hotel bookings in the event of a cancelation or change of requirements.
The site also allowed hotels to see which travelers are interested in a particular location and how much they are willing to pay, giving them the chance to swap their original booking with a personalized offer.
The company had not raised any significant funding rounds and had been fairly quiet for the last three years.
HotelPlanner says the acquisition will allow it expand the existing service with additional tools for targeting individual travelers as well as groups.
The auction technology will be continued and promoted to other parts of the travel sector and adjoining industries, HotelPlanner says.
HotelPlanner was launched in 2001 and has also acquired TravelTicker and Hotel Hotline, again folding the sites into the main brand.
