Going back a few years there were countless travel sites that fed in content to Google Maps from third parties.
Championed by the likes of the Google Maps Mania blog for many years, integrating content into Google's product has become a sport of sorts, with everything from mapping crime patterns to waiting times for doctor appointments.
Favourites for travel-related including integrating images from Flickr or Panoramio or, more recently, locations of Tweets or check-ins from FourSquare.
And, so, 2014 brings us the latest iteration and user content trend of the moment - the drone video.
TravelByDrone (get it!?) has collected YouTube clips of locations filmed with drones (the consumer kind, not the military kind) and plotted them on a Google Map.
The user selects a location, opens up the embedded YouTube player and hey presto, (mostly dreamy) terrible music and slow flybys of dozens of destinations around the world.
The site is also encouraging users to add their own clips for inclusion on the map.
Wonderfully simple, no business model (just Google Ads), fabulous time-waster...
Here are some of the clips:
Grand Canyon, US
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Berlin, Germany
