Sadly, many young child face cancer treatments that confine them to long hospital stays. But a handful of such children at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital were able to escape briefly, thanks to an effort by Expedia.
The online travel agency asked four patients where they wish they could visit. They then sent employees with 360-degree cameras and live-streaming systems -- with the help of advertising agency 180LA -- to locations where they could show the kids those scenes.
Expedia employees went to Argentina, Miami, and Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and beamed back the images to a four-wall virtual reality installation they had set up at the hospital.
The kids were surrounded by images of the locations. In one of the scenes, a boy was able to watch someone dig for dinosaur fossils; another child was able to see what it's like to run with horses.
