Nuro, Lucid and Uber confirmed that on-road testing of its robotaxis began last month.
Robotics company Nuro is leading testing of the robotaxi engineering prototypes, which are overseen by autonomous vehicle operators. Commercial service is expected to launch in the San Francisco Bay Area later in 2026.
The companies made the announcement at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show this week, also showcasing the in-cabin experience for riders. The robotaxis will have in-vehicle visualization, showing riders the vehicle's path in real-time and displaying what the robotaxi sees. They will also feature LEDs to help riders identify the right vehicles and provide status updates.
“By combining leading expertise in electric vehicles, autonomy and ridehailing, we’re building a unique new option for affordable and scalable autonomous rides in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond,” said Sarfraz Maredia, global head of autonomous mobility and delivery at Uber.
Uber first partnered with Nuro and electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid over the summer. At the time, the trio confirmed plans to deploy 20,000 or more Lucid Gravity vehicles equipped with Nuro's autonomy system.
Uber said it was making “multi-hundred-dollar investments” as part of the deal, with other sources reporting that the rideshare company was investing $500 million in Nuro specifically.
