Snap has acquired crowdsourced mapping company Pixel8.earth.
The acquisition price of $7.6 million was confirmed by Snap to one media source.
Pixel8.earth describes itself as a “perpetually updating map that fuses terrestrial and aerial data” with the company enabling users to browse 3D content as well as create an account and build their own models.
A blog post from Pixel8.earth says the team is joining Snap’s map and augmented reality teams.
The acquisition follows Snap’s acquisition of location data specialist StreetCred for an undisclosed amount.
Last year Snap launched Lens Studio providing developers with a range of tools to build augmented reality experiences.
The company also introduced Local Lens, a shareable augmented reality experience with London’s Carnaby Street picked as the first destination.
GoogleMaps has also been incorporating augmented reality features to aid navigation via its Live View function.
