Long Tail of Travel in its full glory here with the launch of SnowCarbon - a new European website dedicated to showing ski fans how to reach the slopes of the Alps and Pyrenees in what it claims is most environmentally concious way, by rail.
The brainchild of Daniel Elkan and co-founder Mark Hodson, both seasoned consumer travel journalists with years of experience penning articles about the ski industry, SnowCarbon is primarily an eco-driven content site which provides tips and advice on rail routes, hotels and destinations.
Only destinations with a reasonable connecting rail route - not always certainty in Europe - are featured on the site.
An affiliate scheme to land users on route and ticket pages of rail operator websites after filling in the relevant online form will be launched within the next week.
Those included in the roll-call will be Eurostar and RailEurope.
One of the intriguing parts of the SnowCarbon story is that the founders sought funding from the individual ski resort official offices from the featured destinations - a process completed on a whirlwind rail trip around Europe by Elkan during the summer of 2009.
The Swiss tourist board also backed the project with an initial round of investment. The affiliate deal with rail and ski tour operators will add to a revenue pot as well the inevitable display advertising.
Hodson says the likely areas to grow the business initially will be with the launch of language sites around Europe, before heading to the major ski playgrounds of North America.
