There is not a lot of surprise in the data coming out of HotelsCombined that says hotel searches for Brazil have jumped 91% in the months ahead of the Olympic Games.
The year-on-year increase for UK customers found in the accommodation metasearch engine's traffic is comparable to other major sporting events hosted around the world - but there is another trend in the data that is noteworthy.
Whilst there was a major jump in searches, conversions from those results to actual bookings for accommodation had, in fact, slumped by some 42% over the same period.
In other words: huge interest in figuring out what is on offer, but very little take-up on when it comes making a booking.
Whilst this may say something about HotelsCombined and its ability to convert customers, a more likely outcome is that travellers have been happy getting ideas for where to stay but have been put off by price, or concerns around safety and their general well-being following reports of some high-profile athletes pulling out over the Zika virus.
In the host city of Rio, searches have increased by 11% year-on-year, whilst those for the country's biggest city - Sao Paulo - climbed by 53%.
HotelsCombined argues that the marked difference between "interest" and "commitment to booking" suggests that the tourism boom that the organisers and tourism officials have anticipated has yet to materialise.
With the opening ceremony and events due to start imminently, UK and Ireland country manager at HotelsCombined, Dmitrijus Konovalovas, says there could be a sudden rush for late bookings once the Games have started showing on TV screens.
