Japan Airlines is the latest to join the Beacon fray with the start of a one-month trial at Haneda Airport's domestic terminal.
The carrier is working with the Nomura Research Institute to test iBeacons as well as smartwatches to give passengers a better service whilst on the ground and employ staff more efficiently.
The iBeacons have been installed at each boarding gate and can locate staff so that passengers are dealt with immediately and staff can be allocated to the desks as required.
Using Samsung Galaxy S5 and Gear2 smartwatches, staff can check and share operating information.
The airline also plans to test other smartwatches including the Android Wear-powered LG G watch.
The Japan Airlines initiative is part of its bid to "Embrace New Challenges"effort, which was unveiled last month and sees the airline launching new products and services each month.
The carrier also said JAL Sky Wi-Fi would be launched on domestic routes as part of the challenges scheme.
The beacon trial also follows several other similar trials of beacon technology at airports and by airlines including easyJet's iBeacon trial sending push notifications to travellers telling them when to have boarding cards ready.
Virgin Atlantic has been working with airline technology organisation SITA to place beacons at various points around the customer journey to see where they have most impact - service, retail, or both.
SITA has meanwhile announced plans to install beacons at 10 airports in the next 12 months. It is already engaged in a trial with American Airlines at Dallas Fort Worth which seeks to smooth the passenger journey through the airport.
