Hilton Worldwide is adding keyless entry to its app for loyalty members with plans to deploy the Digital Key at 250 US hotels by early 2016.
The move is part of Hilton's ongoing drive for a more seamless experience and comes on top of digital check-in which was launched a year ago.
The HHonors mobile app now enables members to book via the app, check-in digitally, select a room, use the device for keyless entry and request room service items.
Hilton started testing Digital Key in August at one property and will continue testing in further properties across Hilton, Waldorf, Conrad and Canopy brands over the coming months.
Rival hotel group Starwood began keyless entry via its SPG mobile app last November while InterContinental Hotels Group announced in June that it is testing keyless entry technologies.
Others have also made forays into the potential for keyless entry most notably HotelTonight which last year said it was working with Brivo Labs to enable guests to check-in and open their hotel room via mobile app.
However, in an update to Tnooz earlier this year, Jared Simon, chief operating officer of the startup, confirmed it had been in discussion with hotel partners but that the innovation was deemed ahead of its time.
At the time, he also said the company was confident its "technology will play a significant role in enabling a much more frictionless check-in process soon."
