As we look forward to The Phocuswright Conference, PhocusWire is highlighting a number of conference speakers in a series of Q&As.
On November 20, Mariano Dima, chairman of Civitatis, will take part in an executive panel during a center stage session. “The Bridge Series: Leveling Up - Tech and Product for the Next 20” session will focus on dissecting the modern travel playbook.
Below, Dima discusses the long-term impact of artificial intelligence (AI) impact long-term, what he's currently working on and how he uses AI daily.
When we look back in five years time, what will be the biggest impact of AI?
It will impact everything. The way we search, discover, create, work, learn, shop and interact with technology, companies and devices. The transformations will be profound, and although it is hard to predict the full extent at this point, they will be meaningful and rapid.
I am positive and optimistic about the impact, and as with previous technological revolutions, it will require tectonic shifts in the way we think and apply AI capabilities across business and life. What will probably not change is the importance of human interaction and experiences. Traveling, exploring the world and discovering new destinations, unknown cultures or hidden gems will always be part of human nature.
What are you working on currently that excites you?
Helping companies translate these changing environments into growth opportunities that foster genuine human connections, especially when this creates value for the end users, supports local economies and strengthens profitable businesses such as Civitatis. The travel industry is a landscape I know very well, and it is about to see many positive changes. There has never been a better time to work in travel.

What's one thing about travel you would tell newcomers to the industry?
Travel is exciting and one of the most important parts of everyone’s life. We are in the business of building memories, which makes it one of the most incredible industries to work in.
In this AI and digital world, the role of travel is even more important than ever. Nothing “artificial” can replace the real feelings of connecting with new cultures, places and people. There are many opportunities ahead, plenty of clever people and businesses tackling similar challenges, so learn from them and create your own success. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.
How are you personally using AI in your day-to-day work?
It is embedded in my everyday life, from searching, learning and developing new ideas to helping me communicate more effectively with teams and companies. I use various LLMs, Comet as my browser and Cursor and Lovable for coding and building prototypes. Still, there is so much to learn.
Who are you most looking forward to hearing speak at the conference and why?
Phocuswright’s speakers are best in class, and I highly value the contributions of the most established players. But I am always surprised by newcomers and their fresh ways of tackling existing challenges. I generally learn a lot from new companies in emerging geographies like LATAM, India and Asia.
