Phocuswright Europe 2022: Developing decentralized ID

Travel and hospitality providers invest huge amounts of both time and money in an effort to know their customers – with the ultimate aim of creating offers and experiences that are tailored, relevant and valued. 

Traditional solutions are based on vast databases of customer information, combined with tools for customer communications, itinerary and logistics management, loyalty marketing, expense reporting and more. 

There’s little argument that the existing model is not ideal – with limitations caused by clunky, disparate systems that inhibit smart use of the data and that also put the data at risk of being breached.  

Now developers on the front lines of decentralized digital ID say it could be the solution the travel and hospitality industry has been looking for, with the potential to revolutionize the way suppliers and travelers interact.

Built on the blockchain, decentralized digital ID puts ownership of an individual’s identity and preferences only in the hands of that individual – creating a customer-controlled, customer-consented relationship that requires brands to rethink their systems and strategies but that also has the potential to open up new opportunities for retailing, loyalty, personalization and seamless, efficient experiences. 

During a Center Stage session at Phocuswright Europe 2022, two of the people at the forefront of work on this technology - Nick Price, chair of the Hospitality and Travel Special Interest Group within the Decentralized Identity Foundation, and Florian Daniel, CIO of Deutsche Hospitality, a hotel company that has been part of a trial of digital identity in partnership with the German government - will take the stage to discuss current developments, future potential and the challenges that may exist along the way.
