Smartphones continue to dominate for searching tours and activities, according to trends highlighted by TourScanner, a search engine in the space.
The report reveals a 62% usage of the devices, although for booking, desktop still tips the scale at 54%.
TourScanner points to other industry reports such as Trekksoft that reveal 57% of online bookings were carried out via mobile in 2018 but 73% of revenue was from desktop.
For Klook meanwhile, also cited in the report, 75% of bookings came from mobile devices in 2018, which perhaps reflects its Asian customer base compared to TourScanner’s American and European customer base.

Further trends highlighted in the study reveal more than 50% of mobile transactions occur between the day of the activity and two days prior to it.
It also highlights a big spike in volume of bookings of activities on the day of consumption, although higher-value experiences tend to be booked earlier.
TourScanner finds 50% of activity bookings are made less than eight days before consumption.
Similarly, Phocuswright research shows 38% of bookings happen up to two days before the day of the activity, while Google research shows 48% of bookings happen when travelers are already in their destination.
Average booking value is $157, which is, according to the report, in line with research from other companies including GetYourGuide.
Further highlights of the study reveal that the majority (40%) of those booking activities online tend to be aged 25 to 34, while about a fifth are aged between 35 and 44.
The report was compiled by analyzing the behavior of TourScanner’s one million visitors and 10,000 bookings in 2019.
