One of the ironies around Thomas Cook and its plot to be a top online travel agency in Europe was that its flight+hotel product was powered by Expedia.
Revealed earlier this year, any buyer of a dynamically packaged holiday on the Thomas Cook website was actually purchasing an Expedia product, complete with consumer protection provided by the online travel agency rather than Thomas Cook - something that wasn't exactly clear to consumers unless they researched which organisation was behind the ATOL number.
But as soon as Thomas Cook stated its aim to become a top European OTA it was clear that it would need to develop its own dynamic packaging service or partner with someone else.
Privately, Expedia was also looking forward to ending a partnership which was effectively helping the operator achieve its aim - indeed, Thomas Cook CEO Manny Fontenla-Novoa had previously singled out Expedia as one of the companies it wanted to compete with.
But as the Cook OTA team has grown in previous months, Expedia (through its Worldwide Travel Exchange white label) has remained, with officials declining to comment on when a transition would begin.
It now looks like this is starting to happen.
UK visitors to Thomascook.com looking for flight+hotel packages are now seeing a system powered in part by Multicom, the travel technology firm which already handles Cook's FlexibleTrips dynamic packaging system.
Similar to the FlexibleTrips partnership, product is sourced by Multicom and the booking engine provided by Comtec's Travelink. It is unclear if the new service is a permanent arrangement or a temporary measure. Cook has yet to confirm any details.
Nevertheless, Expedia is slowly becoming a distant memory - no doubt suiting both sides.
