STARTUPS: Facebook, not that long ago, was no different from any other startup when it came to organising its pay structure for those eager to join the company. But with growth came a haphazard and not particularly transparent way for it handle employee compensation and reviews. Clearly most startups are not in the same league to Facebook (in terms of size and impact), but some of the principles behind its HR transformation can be applied to any business. When Molly Graham joined Facebook, the company already had 400 employees, but there was no official performance or compensation system in place.
There had been attempts, but nothing stuck.
The result: Very little transparency, a lot of one-off compensation decisions, frustration and confusion.
Working closely with Sheryl Sandberg and HR chief Lori Goler, Graham set out to change this by going back to the basics.
