In all the furore over the sale of Lonely Planet earlier this year and Google buying Frommers in August 2012 it was easy to forget just how long the travel guidebook has been around.
The modern-day version of the travel bible which most people are familiar with has been kicking about since the 1970s, but you have to go back a lot further to find the very first "guide".
A decent enough infographic from Cheapflights has tried to plot some of the key dates in the evolution of the travel guide, including one of the less than savoury milestones in Lonely Planet's history (last December's closure of its forums) and the wider move to mobile applications.
