The creators of 101Holidays are launching 101ShortBreaks this week as part of a wider programme to expand the business into niche areas of the travel industry.
The original 101Holidays site (powered by Wordpress) launched in January this year and uses a unique and widely praised interface to publish details of 101 different trips, hand-picked by its team of travel journalists. 101ShortBreaks features a mixture of deals provided by tour operators and hotel owners.
The founders are hoping to unveil a further three new portals within the next 12 months, with another niche site expected in January 2010.
Director Catherine Leech says the first will focus on honeymoons (and continuing with the 101 branding). Sites for family holidays and holidays in France are the most likely areas to be included in the roll-out programme for the next 12 months.
The company has registered around 40 to 50 other domains using the 101 moniker including spa and action holidays.
Revenue at 101 is from deal advertisers pledging to be included on the 101 list for a 12-month period. Leech says only nine of the original 101 on the main site have changed since January2009.
International expansion (into the US and Europe) is on the agenda, Leech says, but is a long-term project and most likely to use local editors to source deals and content.
