Qantas will soon offer virtual-reality headsets to select first-class passengers to see if they like the devices' three-dimensional spin on in-flight entertainment.
The Samsung VR Gear headsets are powered by Oculus technology and connect with Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phones.
They're loaded with 3D videos, such as of what it looks like to watch an A380 land from the point of view of the tarmac. Tourism board See Australia has provided a promotional film for Kakadu National Park and Australia's Northern Territory.
From mid-March through June, Qantas will offer the headsets on some of its A380 flights between Australia and Los Angeles--with about four headsets in each 14-seat cabin. (Pity the airline staff that has to deal with the 10 other disappointed first-class passengers.)
From mid-February, it will offer the virtual reality headsets in its first-class lounges in Sydney and Melbourne.
One user on Reddit has posted a description of what it's like to use the headset, and the following promotional video gives a taste, too:
The headsets will be on sale worldwide from mid-February and retail for around $250 each, excluding the smartphone. Films will be available for purchase from the app store.
