Middle East carrier Royal Jordanian is claiming credit for hosting the first official aircraft tweetup in the Middle East, part of a project to raise its social media profile in the region.
The idea was to invite 20 of Jordan's top bloggers and influencers in social media to meet up on-board one of the airline's new A320 aircraft.
RJ claims the event is the first in the region and only the second official tweetup organised by an airline anywhere in the world (depends on definition of a tweetup, bloggers are being whisked around by airline's regularly these days).
The airline decided to host the event as the best way to promote its wider social media strategy - Facebook page (47,000 fans), Twitter profile, etc.
Around 1,500 tweets were sent from the assembled bloggers on the aircraft during the tweetup, as crew handed out gifts (including toy model aircraft - what more do you need?), RJ pillows and other branded goods.
Obviously the most important element of the event was to demonstrate the airline's in-flight services, hopefully triggering a round of positive articles from those on-board.
Perhaps the only problem with the event, however, is that aviation regulations prevented the aircraft from taking off!
An official from the agency which organised the event is unsure why, but perhaps the large Twitter and Facebook icons hanging from the ceiling of the inside of the fuselage might have something to do with it.
A video illustrates that for some of the bloggers at least, it was a pretty well received idea (despite the view only being of the airport tarmac).
