The Ballymascanlon House Hotel in Ireland has started legal proceedings against Google over results appearing in its autocomplete tool which suggest the property is or has been in receivership.
The County Louth-based hotel has initiated the legal action after the word "receivership" began appearing against the hotel name in the second result on the autocomplete drop-down when users were searching for the property.
The hotel says it has taken a number of calls and emails from customers concerned that the hotel may close down as a result of going into receivership. Future reservations are also being affected, the hotel claims.
Management are angry as the hotel has traded for 60 years and is on a sound financial footing.
Google ignored requests through the usual online feedback tools for something to be done, but the hotel has since - after receiving a summons - been told by Google that the autocomplete functionality is handled by its US counterparts.
Autocomplete is supposed to suggest keywords for which other users have been searching.
Ballymascanlon managing director Niall Quinn confirmed the hotel has launched legal proceedings but has been told by legal advisors not to comment any further.
Google has yet to respond to requests for information.
