Some estimates put the amount of lost revenue across the industry from lost bookings due to poor wifi at close to $5 billion a year.
And while the debate has moved on in recent years from one of demanding free wifi to simply wanting efficient wifi for which many travellers are happy to pay a nominal fee, still a sizeable section of the hospitality sector sees connectivity as a high-end revenue item for guests rather than a basic service (like towels).
The quality aspect of wifi connections is becoming even more important with guests wanting to stream content such as video or hook up for Skype calls or Hangouts.
In other words: the wifi networks of just three or four years ago are probably no longer enough to support some properties.
Cue more expense for hoteliers, of course, but - as some suggest - a hotel would replace its towels and other items quickly enough if guests demanded it, right?
