After two years as an online event, Phocuswright Europe returns to
the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam June 27 to 29.
The theme of Phocuswright Europe 2022, Fast Forward - A Strong,
Sustainable Future, speaks to the both the momentum for innovation as the world
emerges from the pandemic and also the need for a thoughtful, stable long-term vision.
As industry leaders gather for this event, certainly a likely topic
of their conversation will relate to funding – where investments are coming
from and who they are going to, the current climate for raising capital, the state
of travel startups and predictions of who may be tomorrow’s winners.

In fact, startup
funding in general has been making headlines recently – though not in a positive
sense. The drop in the U.S. stock market and ongoing inflation, the war in
Ukraine and the lingering COVID crisis have exposed cracks in what had been appeared
to be stable ground.
According
to Bloomberg, “Globally, fundraising has slowed, with the number of
megarounds ($100 million or more) and the total amount raised declining in the
first quarter, the first time that’s happened in almost two years.”
In travel, however, funding is still
coming at a brisk pace. Just this month PhocusWire has covered news of rounds
for Kindred
($7.75 million), Faye
($8 million), Bookaway
($35 million), Mint
House ($35 million) and Movable
Ink ($55 million), along with acquisitions by Sabre
and others.
In
a Center Stage session at Phocuswright Europe, three of the industry’s leading
investment professionals - Suzanna Chiu, head of Amadeus Ventures, the start-up investment program of Amadeus IT Group; Christian Saller, general partner at Berlin-based venture capital firm HV Capital; and Christoph Schuh, partner at Lakestar, a Switzerland-based venture capital firm - will sit down with Phocuswright senior vice president
of research Charuta Fadnis to dissect the current and future outlook for travel
funding.
