An acquisition and a seed investment round for Campspace, a platform with 2,000+ plays to stay under canvas in 30 countries.
The company, created in 2017 and based in The Netherlands, has brought in €3 million in a debut round led by VNV Global.
David Vismans (previously chief product officer at Booking.com) and Andrea Carini have supported the round as angel investors.
Campspace has simultaneously announced the acquisition of Pop-Up Camps, a German competitor in the camp booking sector.
The company says it will use the investment and the acquired brand to push into the German market and elsewhere in Europe.
It is also tapping into a growing trend for travelers to consider sustainable options for their accommodation selection, highlighting a recent Booking.com study that claims 81% of consumers will opt for greener hospitality types.
Hugo van Donselaar, CEO and co-founder, says: “Currently, the travel industry accounts for about 10% of global CO2 emissions. Due to continued population and prosperity growth, the number of tourists and the negative impact on our environment is only set to increase.
"By opening up hidden outdoor stays closer to home, we make tourism more sustainable and meet the needs of the next generation of travelers. We live in the most well-connected time in human history but on a person-to-person level we remain incredibly unconnected.
"Our platform provides people with unique experiences and memories, but not at the cost of the planet and local communities.
Since launch (van Donselaar was joined by Merijn Straathof and Jeroen Wielaards on the founding team), Campspace claims to have grown at a rate of 300% per year and says the post-pandemic surge in popularity of outdoor travel has "yet to slow down."
