Happy days for AirAsia it seems with news that its mobile channel is apparently breaking records for bookings to a low cost carrier from a handset.
The airline reckons a recent promotion designed to push consumers to book via handsets and the web led to bookings in the "hundreds of thousands of Malaysian Ringgit" range during a single day.
AirAsia will not disclose exact figures, but is confident that a milestone has been reached.
Gerry Samuels, founder of the provider of AirAsia's mobile system, Dublin, Ireland-based Mobile Travel Technologies, says from its discussions with many airlines it appears the volumes achieved are certainly record-breaking.
But such claims illustrate a growing requirement, perhaps, for airlines to upgrade how they report data through various booking channels, unless carriers consider mobile as the same digital channel as web bookings?
Samuels says currently very few airlines disclose volume or the value of bookings through mobile handsets.
British Airways, for example, says around 20,000 customers a day are using its iPhone mobile app.
