Civitatis founder and CEO Alberto Gutiérrez has announced that he is leaving the role. His successor, current chief product and technology officer Andrés Spitzer, will take over January 1, 2026.
Gutiérrez will remain on the board of directors for the tours and activities marketplace.
“Starting Civitatis 18 years ago was a dream; seeing it become the global leader it is today has been the privilege of a lifetime,” Gutiérrez said.
“This is a personal decision taken at a time when the company is stronger than ever. I am handing over the reins with absolute confidence. Andrés has the vision, the technological expertise and the drive to take Civitatis to heights we haven't even imagined yet.”
The company noted that Spitzer “brings a distinguished technology, marketplace and travel track record,” with previous experience at Amazon, Europcar and Ubeeqo.
“I am honored to step into this role and build upon the incredible foundation Alberto has laid,” Spitzer said.
“Civitatis is a rare gem in the tech world—profitable, growing and beloved by customers and partners alike. My focus will be to leverage our technology and product capabilities to accelerate our ecosystem, delivering even more value to our travelers, travel agencies and suppliers.”
During a CEO Spotlight interview at The Phocuswright Conference in late 2024, Gutiérrez said the “key to his success” was his ability to do a little bit of everything—from coding to finding investors—but he conceded that this is “not easy to replicate.”
