- KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is celebrating its Dutch-ness with two Facebook campaigns - HollandExplore and Why Amsterdam? The first, developed with the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions, hopes to be a viral game aimed at promoting unknown aspects of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague. The airline hopes HollandExplore will add 10,000 fans to its Facebook profile and the promotion is supported by an online digital cammpaign running throughout May. Why Amsterdam, meanwhile, is a Facebook monthly poll to gauge what attracts UK travellers to Amsterdam.
- Wireless in-flight entertainment will be installed in up to 9,000 aircraft by 2021 says a report from electronics market intelligence firm IMS Research. Benefits range from additional revenue streams and improved in-flight customer service to reduced weight as passengers receive content to personal tablets and mobile phones or airline devices.
- Responsible Travel has teamed with Tourism Tasmania to develop a free Tasmania application. Launch of the app is to celebrate the destination's 30 years as a World Heritage Site and features include Tasmanian devil sounds, access to local tours and places to stay, GoogleMaps and Facebook integration.
- Frommer's is to launch a Day-by-Day series of guides for iPad and iPhone in May. The digital guides have been development by Inkling and include interactive tours, slideshows, a search facility and links to relevant websites. Destinations including Great Britain, Spain and France are among the first to be unveiled with more to follow.
- Manchester Airport has rolled up live flight information, timetables and airport maps into a mobile website optimised for iPhone and Android developed by KMP Digitata. The site, which is in addition to the airport's existing iPhone service, also includes the ability to book car parking and airport extras as well as link to social media.
