Doubles all round at TripAdvisor today after reaching a significant marker in its history: the site now carries 50 million individual reviews from consumers.
The milestone was achieved after a doubling in the number of reviews and opinions on the site over the course of the past two years, as well as significant expansion into new territories.
The growth curve has been steep. After hitting one million reviews in 2005, TripAdvisor's push into Europe during the following two years saw it hit ten million reviews in 2007 and 25 million in 2009.
Factoids produced to celebrate reaching the 50 million mark include:
- 25 new contributions ever minute.
- 40 million users every month.
- Luxor Las Vegas hotel has 6,100 reviews.
- Word count on the site is the same as 9,420 copies of Tolstoy's War and Peace.
Nevertheless, the site still manages to attract plenty of criticism from consumers and the industry, and is still
embroiled in a testy battle with Google over its reviews appearing on the Places pages against hotel properties and other attractions.
TripAdvisor is also expecting to be spun-off by parent company Expedia, although this is now not likely to happen until later in 2011.
