The preliminary results are in from destination-content publisher Frommer's: iPad users' visits to Frommers.com are notching more pageviews per user on average than are desktop visitors and those using other mobile devices.
That development is a hopeful one for Frommer's, according to Frommer's Unlimited director of e-business development, Craig Schickler, who sees the spike as an opportunity to engage website visitors in a deeper way.
Schickler sees the iPad as more than just an iPhone with a larger format, and believes that travel companies will be able to use the iPad to provide more inspiration about destinations for trip-planners.
I sat down with Schickler at PhoCusWright's Travdex trade show in Atlanta the other day.
Weeks after implementing a technology partnership with NileGuide, Schickler outlined a few of Frommer's upcoming initiatives.
Frommer's, he says, is working on an augmented reality app.
Based on travelers' geo-location, they will be able to point their mobile devices and access destination information about area points of interest, Schickler says.
There will be plenty of images and links to Frommers.com, he says.
Schickler says the augmented reality app will be ready for prime time in June or July.
Also on the Frommer's agenda is a premium version of its iPhone apps, Schickler says.
Schickler provided scant detail on this "pro version" and subscription service, merely saying it will have "additional functionality."
Meanwhile, Frommer's Unlimited, the company's business-to-business unit, continues to notch deals to provide its guidebook content to other webistes on a private-label basis, with at least one big announcement in the works.
