Egypt's tourism fortunes are on the up with quarterly figures from Experian Hitwise showing Sharm El Sheikh is back in the top 50 destinations people want to fly to after a nine month absence.
The Red Sea resort takes the number 39 slot with a 21% in searches for flights and holidays for the quarter from May to July.
Egypt is recovering from a series of incidents including shark attacks in December 2010 followed by violent protests earlier this year which saw the country fall out of favour.
The graph below demonstrates how local issues affected general UK searches over the period with the blue line showing how searches for the term Egypt holidays dipped when the shark attacks hit the headlines.
Other noteworthy stats in the quarterly report:
- There were two billion visitors to the travel industry this quarter - one of the sector's busiest ever
- New York was the top destination with 5% flight searches, other US cities also gained ground
- Four out of the top 10 destinations were in Spain
