Jeffrey Glueck joined Foursquare as chief operating officer in 2014 and took over as CEO in early 2016. Although social check-ins are still part of its service, the company has transitioned to a location technology platform helping businesses with location insights.

Foursquare counts travel companies such as Hilton and TripAdvisor among its customers as well as big names including Samsung and Tencent.

Foursquare started out as a social check-in platform in 2009 but began its transition to a location technology platform more than three years ago.

Now the company helps many large travel players such as Hilton, TripAdvisor and Uber with location-based insights.

Jeffrey Glueck took over as CEO in 2016 after previously creating Site59, which was later was acquired by Travelocity.

Glueck sat down in the PhocusWire Studio at The Phocuswright Conference last month in Florida to discuss the location technology and its work with large consumer goods companies.

He also talks about wider travel industry trends and things that have surprised him in the past year.

A week after this interview, Glueck announced he is leaving Foursquare to pursue a role that crosses technology and politics.
