American, Delta and Air Canada all are talking to the U.S. Transporation Security Administration about pilot programs that would enable passengers to tag their own luggage instead of having ticket counter agents do it.
The TSA is engaged in discussions with American and Air Canada about a trial program in Boston and separately Delta is in contact with the agency about an experiment at another airport, reports USA Today.
Passengers would print their luggage tags at customized, airport self-service kiosks, the report says, noting that this wouldn't compromise airline security because the screening system would be unaltered.
Luggage tags feature a barcode and the destination airport code. The bags would be screened as usual and the tags would be scanned before being loaded onto the aircraft.
The programs, of course, would bring labor cost savings to airlines, which increasingly are using self-service kiosks at the airport.
