Web traffic figures have indicated a massive jump in volume to travel sites in the UK over the weekend as poor weather conditions hit flight schedules.
Data courtesy of audience measurement service Hitwise indicates that traffic to travel industry sectors (airlines, destinations and accommodation and agencies) jumped by 31.1% between Friday 17 and Saturday 18 December as people started searching for flight information.
As the extent of the disruption became clearer, travellers were obviously looking for alternative arrangements and whether flights had been cancelled.
UK airport websites also saw similar increases, with the worst affected airport London Heathrow seeing the biggest rise.
Gatwick and Manchester airport websites had likewise jumps in traffic. The previous marks in traffic indicated below were during disruption two weeks ago in the UK.
Interestingly, Hitwise says visits to online shopping retailers in the UK has not seen a "late boon" in traffic as shoppers decide to complete their purchases online with so much disruption to the UK transport network.
Hitwise research director Robin Goad says traffic to its shopping and classified category has dropped by 16.3% week-on-week.
