It's been a long time coming, but Skyscanner can finally go head-to-head with arch-rival Kayak on their respective mobile applications.
The UK-based metasearch engine has this week added both hotel and car rental search to its existing mobile apps on Android and iOS.
Until now, the app, which it claims has been downloaded some 40 million times worldwide, only handled flight searches, whilst standalone apps had been built for car rental and hotels.
The move puts it on a par with Kayak's mobile applications, which have featured the trio of product searches together for over half a decade.
Skyscanner first began including car rental search in its desktop service in 2009 when it inked a deal with CarTrawler to power the back-end. It's now done in-house.
A substantial move into hotel search (Skyscanner had previously acted as an affiliate by using HotelsCombined) began when it purchased hotel metasearch startup Fogg in September 2013.
Although it has started including tours and activities as another product line for users, Kayak has yet to add the functionality onto its mobile apps.
Skyscanner head of app product, Balint Orosz, says the launch of a new app that includes all three main products comes as "the needs of our customers evolve".

"We’ve incorporated all of the learnings and user feedback from our standalone hotels and car hire apps into this new, upgraded offering, making it the ultimate app to serve all your travel needs."
