Switzerland-based software firm Kooaba has created a way of making street billboards more informative, using augmented reality to give the user reams of additional content.
The idea is a step further on from use of square barcodes that a number of billboard advertisers have started using, where a mobile handset can take a picture and be redirected to the host website.
In this case, the user points their mobile phone at any poster with the APG Icon and, using the augmented reality software (known as Paperboy) on the handset, details about the product are streamed in instantly.
The example below is for a ladies footwear brand, but the possibilities for travel advertisers are endless - such as links to discount pages, product descriptions for hotels or, perhaps most interestingly, detailed information (video, images, etc) for destinations.
Think of the vast quantity of DMO advertisers on billboards around the world that could spruce up the message with some instant multimedia content on the user's handset.

Kooaba is no stranger to the travel sector, having worked with Irish firm Snap2Travel to power the technology behind its service to allow consumers to take pictures of travel ads in newspapers and get instant prices from travel agents.
