A sizeable study in Australia has found that the younger generation is leading the charge of the mobile device as a key part of the travel planning and booking process.
But, first of all, the headline findings from the 10,000+ consumer study.
Research house Roy Morgan found that four times as many Aussies booked a trip via a mobile device in 2015 than the previous year.
Most of the usual channels that Australian consumers use to purchase a travel product all featured in the list of mobile-led bookings in 2015 , but with fairly wide differences.
For example, 38.4% booked accommodation directly on a mobile, compared to just 9.11% for car rental.
Online travel agencies came in at 26.4%.
But look at the age breakdown of travel activity via a mobile device.
There is a direct correlation between the youthfulness of the traveller and their enthusiasm for using a mobile device.
In particular, those in the 65+ age range are lagging far behind their younger counterparts.
Group account director at Roy Morgan Research, Angela Smith, says:
"While a small minority of travellers used their mobile to book part or all of their last holiday in 2015, the numbers are creeping up.
"Currently, this booking method is considerably more widespread among young travellers , which is not surprising. Having grown up with digital technology, they are much more inclined than older generations to use it in all areas of their life – mobile-only banking and gambling via mobile are two other examples that spring to mind."
