European tour operator Thomas Cook has taken its interest in mobile up a massive notch with the launch of a smartphone application for its currency service.
The What's The Rate app was released into Android and iPhone app stores yesterday and works as a virtual platform for its well established exchange service situated normally in travel agency stores.
The system has three core functions:
- Rate Tracker - a monitor to see Thomas Cook Foreign Exchange compares against other high street providers.
- RateWatch - an alert system to see when a particular currency reaches a specific high or low rate against other currencies.
- Foreign exchange - ordering service for currency from a handset, including cash, travellers cheques or the Cook's Cash Passport.
The app is bolstered by the use of maps so users can find the nearest retail exchange service and charts for monitoring fluctuations in exchange prices.
Thomas Cook has, until now, only ventured once into the world of smartphone applications.
An app to stream content from the offline magazine of its Club 18-30 brand was launched in July but was poorly received (at least as far as user feedback on the iTunes appstore indicated).
