Mobile communications provider O2 has launched a travel component that provides both compelling insights into travel across their network and intriguing integrations for mobile travelers.
Appropriately named JetSetMe, the project provides visualization of travel across their customer base as they move about the continent.
The project also allows users to use "Recipes," which bring particular functionality to their travel experiences. By using the recipes, customers can automate certain behaviors related to their travel patterns.
The Recipe format comes from the integration of a 3rd party service called IFTTT - "If This Then That," a clever product that allows users to create simple, repeatable actions that are triggered by specific events.
There are currently 5 Recipes available:
World Tour! Whenever you land tell your followers you're wheels down
I touched down safe and sound. Blink the lights at home!
Don't call me I'm asleep - corporate edition
World Tour! Whenever you land tell your FB friends
For developers seeking to create their own Recipe, the company has also offered a full API to take advantage of subscribers' travel patterns.
O2 customers who want to participate can receive an activation code to their phone via the IFTTT site here.
Using available data in unique consumer-facing ways should be commended as a thoughtful way to engage customers and provide more value to their service. Kudos to O2 for creating such interesting and fun automations that link real-world behavior to other actions - and for opening it all up to developers.
