Your web shadow is what someone sees when they look for you on the internet, the combination of your personal presence on the web and what others say about you and post there.
This includes company bios and social network profiles to holiday photos and mentions on Twitter.
Why does it matter?
We’re used to looking after our companies’ brands online, but increasingly people need to think about their personal reputation on the web, especially those that are well known in social media for being associated with a brand.
Simply put, first impressions in business used to be formed at a first meeting, but now people are increasingly likely to have looked each other up on Google, LinkedIn and Facebook before anyone even sets foot in the room, perhaps before they have even agreed to meet.
The web is becoming the public face of everyone, a part of their identity, so we need to think about how we will manage that from now on.
Over the rest of this week, we’ll offer some advice on how to do this and explore some of the themes from Me and My Web Shadow.
NB: This How To is written by Antony Mayfield and summarises his latest book, Me and My Web Shadow, published by A&C Black and available for £6.99 from Amazon UK
