Something for the map purists, maybe? The Cartographer is a mapping and trip planning service that combines Google Maps with a traditional view.
The rather quirky idea is a new application for the Apple iPhone from mobile software firm A Tasty Pixel, allowing users to switch the existing phone map system for one perhaps more commonly associated with treasure maps or old marine charts.
Alongside the highly unusual view (at least in terms of mobile and web mapping technology), the app contains some interesting functionality including the ability to store locations on the map, import from existing maps, sharing tools and creating and saving trips.
But it is the old view which is the main talking point, especially as users can modify existing Google Maps markers and tools to resemble how they might have looked on a old map.
The app ($4) also works without the often expensive data roaming needing to be switched on.
The main question will be how long until the quirkiness wears off.
