Seamless travel comes top of the wishlist for long-distance international rail journeys when it comes to elements passengers would like to reserve beforehand.
An Amadeus survey shows almost 60% would like to be able to book their connecting rail travel as well as other modes of transport before departure.
After a seamless experience, 46% of respondents want to book on-board entertainment or wifi in advance of travel while 38% want fast-track check in and security and 37% want to be able to book hotels, transfers and insurance.
The 'High Speed Rail Station Project' goes on to question passengers on what personal details they would like their rail provider to know to improve the experience with 52% saying their preferred seat position and location, 42% say their complete travel itinerary and 39% say technology preferences such as wifi and headrest monitor.
The survey also looks at what services international railway stations should provide in 2014 with relaxation areas and more comfortable seating emerging as the top preference for more than 70% of passengers while 40% want to be able to make mobile payments.
Finally, competitive price remains the overriding factor when it comes to choosing international rail over a flight according to 77% of passengers.
However, more than 50% say they would also choose rail if it provided a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.
The study, which was conducted online by YouGov between January and July this year, questioned 7,000 passengers from six European countries.
