You've heard of "social travel" as in Gogobot and Wanderfly, but how about a subset, FlyingSocial?
That's the name of Alaska Airlines' new Facebook app, and social it is.
All of the sudden you go to the FlyingSocial with Alaska Airlines page on Facebook, select Go to App, and you'll see photos of your junior high school girlfriend or work colleague, both of them Facebook friends, depicted on a map.
Click on a number associated with one or two of your Facebook friends and you'll view a one-way fare for a flight to the closest airport near your friends' hometown.
When you select Shop Now, you navigate to a calendar search on the airline website displaying the lowest available one-way fares for each day.
And, you can view available fares on the monthly calendar, by schedule or price. You then can continue shopping and book your flight.
You can also use the FlyingSocial app to shop for flights using miles or regular money.
And, of course, if you're really not sure why you friended your former junior high school girlfriend, who's married and divorced and remarried with three lovely kids, you can pick another Facebook friend on the map and see how much the Alaska Airlines' fare to his or her destination would be.
You can fly social but you don't have to fly foolish.
Alaska Airlines is the latest carrier to take flight booking to Facebook and beyond. Actually, with Alaska, the shopping process begins on Facebook and ends on the airline's website.
And, it's all a fun little exercise in FlyingSocial and social travel Facebook-style.
