With U.S. gasoline prices reaching leave-the-car-at-home levels, automobile club AAA is advising motorists about the perils of running out of fuel.
Beyond that, however, the organization's TripTik Mobile iPhone app at least offers motorists a way to comparison shop for gas stations.
You simply enter your route in the app, select the gas pump icon and then view gas prices at various stations in your desired area.
For example, you can see that the West Milford (N.J.) Automot is offering unleaded gas at $3.86 per gallon as of April 23 and premium gasoline at $4.06 as of April 21.
Over in nearby Hewitt, N.J., Lukoil's unleaded price was slightly pricier at $3.89 per gallon as of April 23 while premium sold for $4.16 per gallon as of April 22.
Of course, given the volatility of gas prices, the dated nature of the stated gas prices may have motorists pulling into the stations and finding prices different than the AAA app advised.
Another problem with the app is that it lists some gas stations where it has no pricing available.
Still, the feature may be of some use as pennies per gallon saved can turn into substantial savings on a long trip.
The app also enables you to get directions or navigate to the stations.
All of that hopefully will get you to the pump before your gas tank is depleted.
The gas-price comparison service also is available on AAA.com.
